L'Institut français de recherche pour l'exploitation de la mer (Ifremer) is a public institute with a commercial and industrial mission and is dependent on the French Ministries of the Environment and the Agricultural Ministry.

It has for missions the following:-

-research, evaluate and highlight the oceans resources and permit their sustainable development

-Improve methods of surveillance, forecasting trends in protection and enhancing the maritime and coastal environments

-Enhance the economic development of the maritime world
