This book describes the grain legume production chain, and then reports on a prospective analysis of the related issues and challenges. It looks at the factors, notably in terms of research, that could serve to make these crops more competitive. The authors assess the agricultural production parameters and the possibilities of boosting grain legume use to feed animals and humans. On a more prospective level, they look at new non-food outlets that would optimize the potential of these crops. Lastly, against a backdrop of trade globalization and decoupling of aid, they call for a new drive to promote these crops for their environmental benefits (they do not require nitrogen fertilizers and contribute to biodiversity). The book is intended for professionals in the sector and for students, but will be of interest to the agricultural world and policymakers, and more generally to anyone concerned about the economic and environmental problems raised by the changes in agriculture.
