Using very detailed analyses of pilot truffle beds and of the micro-environment of the truffle ascocarp (Tuber melanosporum), the author describes the functioning of the truffle ecosystem and emphasizes the importance of the soil factor. The structural studies of the ascocarp and of truffle population dynamics using the techniques of molecular biology make it possible to describe the biological cycle of the truffle in detail. This work is intended not only for teachers and researchers in soil science and biology but also for truffle-growers and for all those interested in learning more about this mysterious fungus.
