The current Jardin d'agronomie tropicale, devoted to sustainable development, was founded in Vincennesin 1899 as the Jardin colonial, with a view to improving the crops grown in the French colonies and ensuring their profitability. Over the years, it has housed a colonial exhibition, a hospital, a mosque, an Indochinese temple and several monuments to colonial soldiers killed in action. This work traces the history of this little-known site, describing the scientific, aesthetic and commemorative sides of its buildings and gardens.
