This book is a sociological and anthropological interpretation of rural and farming communities in Brazil and the changes they have seen in recent decades. A study of how they organize themselves in response to State intervention and the extension of the free trade market made it possible to judge the true contribution made by family farmers and smallholders, which is often overlooked in public policy, statistics, official lines and the media. For instance, the existence of social and economic services unrelated to trade prompted the author to analyse them in terms of reciprocity and redistribution.
