Summary

The food act - as a total social fact - makes a deep-seated impression on the economy and societies. In the era of the global village, this book urges the reader to scrutinise the global food system promoted by the food-processing multinationals as well as the alternative models aiming to renew the ways of producing, trading and eating. It analyses the undercurrents of food consumption from its cultural, nutritional and economic viewpoints. It defines the major traits of world agriculture and food-processing trading and retraces the trajectory of French agriculture. Public policies, strategically important as they support agricultural production and boost food security, are also examined with a fine tooth comb. Lastly, the author questions our ability to feed nine billion human beings in 2050.
