Summary

Roads, railways, waterways, and canals, as well as high-voltage power lines: transportation infrastructure—whether for people, goods, or energy—forms a familiar network across our landscapes.  Their surrounding areas (shoulders, embankments, riverbanks, etc.) serve as potential refuges and ecological corridors for local flora and fauna, as well as areas that help mitigate the effects of climate change. As nature restoration policies gain increasing prominence in Europe and France, these areas are emerging as strategic tools for reconnecting ecosystems and supporting biodiversity.

Drawing on recent research projects, this book demonstrates how these green spaces can help preserve biodiversity through maintenance practices such as late mowing or eco-grazing, implemented in collaboration with local stakeholders.

At the intersection of law, ecology, and public policy, the author traces the evolution of legal frameworks, highlights concrete examples, and proposes courses of action to fully integrate this issue into the management of these rights-of-way, on par with safety and technical performance requirements.
