He worked on Mediterranean rangelands as a botanist-ecologist on the Algerian steppe (1970–71), with an FAO Range Project in Libya (1975–80), with the Western Australian Department of Agriculture (1980–85) where he patented a ‘pitting’- reseeding machine to rehabilitate degraded rangeland. He worked next with INRA (Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique – France) on Mediterraneanpastures while running the Scientific Secretariat of the IVth International Rangeland Congress (1991, Montpellier). He later joined ICARDA (International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas, Syria) as programme leader ‘Pasture, Forage and Livestock Program’ (1992–99). In 1995, he launched a rangeland programme with the coauthors of this book and other Turkmen, Uzbek and Kazakh colleagues in collaboration with the US Global Livestock CRSP – CO2 rangeland flux measurements. The present book was then launched, which Gus enriched with his field experience and wide botanical and ecological knowledge of the rangelands of the Maghreb, Mashreq, Near and Middle East, Middle and Central Asia and Australia. Gus Gintzburger, currently a Research Director with INRA, is positioned with the CIRAD–EMVT/Econap (Centre de Coopération Internationale en Recherche Agronomique pour le Développement – Animal Production and Veterinary Medicine/ Rangeland and Wild Life Management Programme, France). He is specializing in rangeland survey, rehabilitation and plant genetic resources in Mediterranean zones, Near East, Middle and Central Asia. 2 A01 01 A450 Kristina Toderich Toderich, Kristina Kristina Toderich Dr Kristina Toderich gained her PhD in 1988 (Institute of Botany, Academy of Sciences, Leningrad, Russia). Since then, she has worked on the cyto-embryology of Central Asian desert plants. As Head of the Desert Ecology Department and Water Resources Research (Uzbek Academy of Sciences, Samarkand Division), she has managed in a few years to organize a tight and efficient network of biological and environmental activities with scientists from all over the world, thanks to her personal efforts in communicating in English, Russian and other languages of the Central Asian region. She was awarded several grants both in Uzbekistan and abroad–on behalf of Nakajima Peace and International Matsumae Foundation (Japan), ‘Kasa Mianowskiego’ (Poland), CIRAD (France), IREX (USA), NATO and EU INTAS. She is the author of some 80 publications and is currently working on a monograph ‘Genus Salsola of Central Asian: structure, function and adaptive evolutionary trends’. Since 1986, Bakhtiyor has been working on desert ecology, the impact of ungulates on desert vegetation, biodiversity, nature protection, diet and reproduction of rare species of desert ungulates and CO2 flux measurement. He has worked on international projects with ICARDA (Syria), CNRS (France), Global Livestock CRSP (USA) and has published about 30 scientific papers. He is a keen photographer and now Senior Research Range Ecologist with the Desert Ecology Department and Water Resources Research (Uzbek Academy of Sciences, Samarkand Division).  4 A01 01 A452 Muhiddin Makhmudov Makhmudov, Muhiddin Muhiddin Makhmudov Professor Muhiddin Makhmudov is a pasture specialist with some 42 years of research and development work at the Karakul Sheep Research and Desert Ecology Institute (Samarkand). He presented his doctor’s thesis in 1998 and has produced some 123 scientific papers. He selected and implemented the use of three useful and much used desert fodder plants. His scientific interests and activities cover arid fodder production including introduction, selection and reseeding using desert fodder plants, range improvement and advanced technology on the irrigated production of fodder plants. In 2000, the International Academy of Science of Ecology and Safety of the United Nations elected him an academician. Since 1997, he has been involved in several range and fodder production projects and collaboration with ICARDA, IFAD and the US Department of Agriculture.
