<p>Directeur de recherche en écologie fonctionnelle, biogéochimie des sols et des agroécosystèmes à INRAE, Philippe Hinsinger étudie depuis plus de trente-cinq ans les interactions entre sols et racines, ainsi que leurs rôles dans la formation des sols et la nutrition des plantes. </p><p>Il s’est fortement impliqué dans l’édition scientifique (en particulier dans les revues <i>Plant and Soil</i>, et aujourd’hui, en tant qu’éditeur en chef, dans <i>Agronomy for Sustainable Development</i>), ainsi que dans la formation en écologie des sols. De 2018 à 2022, il a dirigé le département AgroEcoSystem d’INRAE en soutenant l’orientation des recherches du département vers la transition agroécologique des systèmes agricoles. </p>

Le fonctionnement des écosystèmes terrestres est lié aux rôles des multiples organismes qui vivent sous terre, ces habitants discrets, cachés ou invisibles à l’œil nu. Des bactéries aux champignons, des animaux microscopiques aux plantes via leurs racines, des arthropodes détritivores ou prédateurs aux petits mammifères, sans oublier les vers de terre, ils interagissent entre eux et modifient profondément les caractéristiques des sols. </p><p>Car les sols évoluent. Ils ont un passé, dont ils gardent des traces, et un devenir. Mais qu’il s’agisse d’espaces exploités, agricoles ou forestiers, ou d’écosystèmes dits naturels ou vierges, ils sont menacés de toutes parts. <p>Soils are amongst the greatest reservoirs of biodiversity of the planet. The functioning of terrestrial ecosystems is linked to the roles played by the many organisms that live underground, discreet, hidden or invisible to the naked eye. From bacteria to fungi, from microscopic animals to plants via their roots, from detritivorous or predatory arthropods to small mammals, not forgetting earthworms, they interact with each other and profoundly modify soil characteristics.</p><p>Soils evolve actually. They have a past, of which they keep traces, and a future. But whether we are talking about farmed or forested areas, or so-called natural or pristine ecosystems, they are threatened in many ways. In addition to artificialization, pollution and declining biodiversity, they are also seriously altered by natural processes such as acidification, salinization and erosion, which are being amplified by human activities.</p><p>Aimed at a wide readership and richly illustrated, this book highlights the richness of soils and the life they harbor, and the pressing need to safeguard them in the context of climate and land-use changes worldwide.</p>

<p>Directeur de recherche en écologie fonctionnelle, biogéochimie des sols et des agroécosystèmes à INRAE, Philippe Hinsinger étudie depuis plus de trente-cinq ans les interactions entre sols et racines, ainsi que leurs rôles dans la formation des sols et la nutrition des plantes. </p><p>Il s’est fortement impliqué dans l’édition scientifique (en particulier dans les revues <i>Plant and Soil</i>, et aujourd’hui, en tant qu’éditeur en chef, dans <i>Agronomy for Sustainable Development</i>), ainsi que dans la formation en écologie des sols. De 2018 à 2022, il a dirigé le département AgroEcoSystem d’INRAE en soutenant l’orientation des recherches du département vers la transition agroécologique des systèmes agricoles. </p>

<p>Les sols constituent l’un des plus grands réservoirs de biodiversité de la planète. Le fonctionnement des écosystèmes terrestres est lié aux rôles des multiples organismes qui vivent sous terre, ces habitants discrets, cachés ou invisibles à l’œil nu. Des bactéries aux champignons, des animaux microscopiques aux plantes via leurs racines, des arthropodes détritivores ou prédateurs aux petits mammifères, sans oublier les vers de terre, ils interagissent entre eux et modifient profondément les caractéristiques des sols. </p><p>Car les sols évoluent. Ils ont un passé, dont ils gardent des traces, et un devenir. Mais qu’il s’agisse d’espaces exploités, agricoles ou forestiers, ou d’écosystèmes dits naturels ou vierges, ils sont menacés de toutes parts. Outre l’artificialisation, la pollution et la diminution de leur biodiversité, ils sont aussi gravement affectés par des processus naturels comme l’acidification, la salinisation et l’érosion, qui sont amplifiés par les activités humaines. </p><p>Destiné à un large public et très illustré, cet ouvrage s’attache à mettre en lumière toute la richesse des sols, de la vie qu’ils abritent, et l’impérative nécessité de leur sauvegarde dans le contexte des changements du climat et de l’usage des terres, partout dans le monde. </p>
<p>Soils are amongst the greatest reservoirs of biodiversity of the planet. The functioning of terrestrial ecosystems is linked to the roles played by the many organisms that live underground, discreet, hidden or invisible to the naked eye. From bacteria to fungi, from microscopic animals to plants via their roots, from detritivorous or predatory arthropods to small mammals, not forgetting earthworms, they interact with each other and profoundly modify soil characteristics.</p><p>Soils evolve actually. They have a past, of which they keep traces, and a future. But whether we are talking about farmed or forested areas, or so-called natural or pristine ecosystems, they are threatened in many ways. In addition to artificialization, pollution and declining biodiversity, they are also seriously altered by natural processes such as acidification, salinization and erosion, which are being amplified by human activities.</p><p>Aimed at a wide readership and richly illustrated, this book highlights the richness of soils and the life they harbor, and the pressing need to safeguard them in the context of climate and land-use changes worldwide.</p>
