Summary

This manual presents an overview of recent knowledge about the effects of human activities on floods in rural areas. Four main topics are discussed: general aspects of land use and management, two aspects of agricultural activities (beginning with practices and followed by drainage and clean-up) and finally, river management. Proposals for good development practices are provided, with the objective that these activities do not aggravate the consequences of flooding.
