Summary

Sampling and analytical techniques for mercury speciation in sea water are described. They allow the determination of elemental mercury (Hg0), dimethylmercury (DMHg), reactive mercury (HgR or "easily reducible mercury" which consists of mainly inorganic mercury species), monomethylmercury (MMHg) and total mercury (HgT) dissolved in sea water. These techniques make it possible to detect trace amounts ranging from 4 to 60 pg L-1, depending on the chemical species and sample volume being considered. The ranges of measurable concentrations are of several orders of magnitude, and reproducibility varies between 5 and 15 %, depending on the species and concentration levels.
