Summary

Lake Annecy is the second largest lake entirely in France and one of the cleanest in the world, despite the fact that until the 1950s, it was the natural outlet for waste water from the towns and villages on its shores, and was under threat of eutrophication. This slow death was only just avoided by increasing awareness in the surrounding area, and the lake's various uses were thus preserved.This summary follows on from the authoritative work by Marc Le Roux (1908): it places the lake within its environment, describes how the physico-chemistry of its water and its microoorganisms have changed, along with its biocoenosis, from the appearance of new fish species to the disappearance of others.
