This report illustrates the involvement of scientific research in the field of pig nutrition and feeds. Feed accounts for more than half of production costs and could be a major lever for making the supply chain switch to production systems that satisfy the various sustainability criteria (economic, environmental and social). Controlling feed costs means determining what the animals require in terms of macro- and micronutrients (for instance vitamins) and the nutritive value of raw materials (for instance spent wheat grains). Feed can help guarantee animals' health and wellbeing (for instance fibres) and foster their adaptation to critical periods such as weaning. It can also serve to adjust meat quality. Lastly, feed is a way of reducing production effluent (nitrogen and phosphorus, copper and zinc), and thus serves to resolve environmental issues.
