The atlas describes English Channel fisheries through the main commercial species, fishing activities, "métiers" (types of gear and techniques used) and maritime districts. The behaviour of French and English regional fisheries is analyzed in terms of the fishing effort and landings, as well as their trends over the period for which data is available (1992-1997). This approach provides a characterization of annual strategies implemented by commercial fishermen with respect to interactions and complementarities between "métiers". Above all, the atlas is a tool promoting the use of fishing statistics to highlight the original features of the Channel compared to adjacent areas in the Atlantic and the North Sea. Brief analyses and comments made by fisheries biologists complement the extensive illustrations.
