After a review of the basic elements concerning activated sludge biology and its visual observation, detailed data profiles for all of the major species encountered are presented with ample illustrations and/or colour photos. These profiles, easily accessible using the identification keys, by alphabetical order or a simplified classification system, are enhanced by an "interpretation" section designed to help treatment station operators to more clearly understand how the plants operate. Annexes with very practical methodological advice and examples of sludge interpretation are included.
