Summary

This fully illustrated book provides new information on the structure and three-dimensional organisation of the plant vascular system and makes a number of hypotheses concerning cambial activity. With the help of the intracellular casting technique, the entire length of ascending sapconducting vessels can now be observed. Over thirty species have been selected from the main groups of the plant kingdom to illustrate the areas in which histological casting can be applied. The successive stages involved in the technical implementation of this new investigative tool are described, thereby inciting the reader to undertake novel research activities.
