Strategies to monitor the quality of the coastal environment are a topical issue, for both ecological and socio-economic reasons. This booklet deals with measuring acetylcholinesterasic activity in various marine species and its inhibition as a biomarker of neurotoxic effects of certain families of contaminants, especially pesticides. Using it for environmental diagnoses requires both thorough knowledge of the enzyme's kinetics and its natural variability, as well as strict characterisation of the conditions for extraction, sample storage and measuring the activity. These aspects are described in detail. The method to measure acetylcholinesterase activity described in this document was published by ICES (International Council for the Exploration of the Sea) in 1997. It is a benchmark method in the field.
