Summary

Held responsible for "fevers" since the Age of Enlightenment, ponds were dried out and abandoned in France and elsewhere. But the pond can be viewed differently. It can be ploughed and sown; cultivated plots can be filled with water; a fish pond can also take on a purifying role. These multi-function possibilities open up prospects for its future development. Its exploitation is based on soft technologies which are environmentally-friendly whilst contributing to the production and diversification of food resources. The pond has thus become a functional component in wetlands. Basing himself on ancient literature, Roland Billard explains the techniques of construction and exploiting ponds and their use by past and present rural societies. His work suggests paths for optimised polyculture of pond fish, a "joint culture" where particular attention is paid to the association of species and their diet.
