Summary

This report adresses the role of space in population dynamics, and highlights some major insights provided by mathematical modelling. Spatially explicit models for continuous space and time are presented, couched in terms of partial differential equations. Examples of application to field data are also examined (biological invasions, predator-prey interactions). Lines of further developments are explored, and challenges facing the definition of a relevant strategy of model building in spatial population dynamics are discussed.
