Summary

Two ethnic groups: the Wolof, sedentary farmers, and the Fula who practise transhumance, have established agricultural development methods that are often not particularly effective but are well suited to their difficult agricultural and human environment. Animal production was not covered by the aid and subsidy policy implemented in support of the agricultural revolution conducted over the past 30 years by the Senegalese government. But the conditions for animal production have nevertheless changed radically: irrigated areas on rangelands, disappearance of dry-season fodder resources. The Waalo Fula have developed animal production systems that turn the available resources into agricultural and agro-industrial by-products through irrigated cropping. Intensification and improved efficiency are now priority issues.
