Summary

Mayotte has been involved in a devolution programme for some twenty years now, and as such has been the object of massive intervention on the part of metropolitan France. This intervention has resulted in considerable economic, social and institutional change, prompted by the major issues facing the territory. This document, which is based on a field study, analyses the conflicts and interactions between an imported rural change model and local rationales and strategies, which are primarily geared towards the long-term future. It sets out to change the ideas the authorities may have of the rural environment.
