Summary

The treatment of phosphorus contained in wastewater must conform to a dual regulatory and environmental requirement whose objective is to limit the eutrophication of inland waters. This document proposes a decision-making tool adapted to small communities, in terms of technical and financial choices, to help them to manage the elimination of phosphorus in wastewater using biological and physicochemical techniques. It provides a brief overview of the regulations in force and discusses the different origins and forms of phosphorus. It then describes the technical aspects of the biological and physicochemical sectors linked to recommendations pertaining to plant design and management. Finally, it compares the different types of phosphorus treatments from an economic point of view.
