Twenty years after its first airing at the 1992 Rio Summit, doubts are now raised over the inclusion of sustainable development in public policies. Sustainable development was perceived as an instrument whereby the "North" dominated the "South", the powerful the disadvantaged. Introducing the notion of territory reverses the perspective and opens up the reflection to the possible interactions between the inhabitants and the changing conditions, in line with their environment.

A stellar case is Amazonia, which the authors use to analyse the complex relationships between territory, sustainable development and modernity and highlight the conditions for adopting sustainable development by the authorities and populations. This territory has the advantage of offering a material ripe for territory-based reflection (Brazilian Amazonia), a blend of international, national and local-territorial issues.
