Summary

1910 - Norway, Great Britain and Japan are all seeking to be the first to plant their country's flag at the South Pole. Roald Amundsen, Robert Falcon Scott and Nobu Shirase set off on an adventure and mounted famous expeditions, but not all of them would return alive. The Ross Sea was the only way of reaching the South Pole. To get there you therefore had to be a sailor and cross the Roaring Forties, Furious Fifties and Howling Sixties. The odysseys of these three men, their crews and their ships are recounted here. The successes and failures of their campaigns are looked at with a fresh eye using modern knowledge. In the context of the International Polar Year 2007-2009, we must be careful not to forget the breathtaking exploits of these men in terms of the rudimentary resources available to them to brave storms, icebergs and Antarctic ice.
