Summary

The lignocellulose biomass of plants is an abundant, inexpensive, renewable resource which is largely under-employed. Mainly composed of cell walls, it is essentially a fibre resource for energy, biomaterials and green chemistry.
This work links the photosynthetic type of plants, their adaptation to the environment and the production potential. The agronomic bases for the production of biomass are covered using the example of sugar cane and interesting plants like Miscanthus sp. The analysis focuses on the sustainability qualities of lignocellulose-specific cultivation systems. Current knowledge of fibre synthesis and composition, the cultivation and industrial uses, post-harvest conditioning and storage problems are all items addressed.
