Summary

Our planet is a vast ocean, dotted with a few continents, whose immensity extends into the dark depths that can reach several kilometers below the thin blue surface. This deep ocean, traversed by powerful currents, reveals spectacular landscapes: steep cliffs, vertiginous canyons, imposing mountains, and vast plains covered here and there with immense fields of pebbles. Long unknown, this diversity of habitats and climates still keeps many secrets. Life thrives there, even in the abyss, despite the absence of sunlight, the scarcity of resources, the hydrostatic pressure, and the cold. Around hydrothermal vents, hydrocarbon seeps, and whale carcasses, it even flourishes with astonishing intensity. Sit-and-wait hunting, cultivating bacteria, living in slow motion, or clinging to their partner for life... We only know a tiny fraction of the surprising abilities of deep-sea species. Diverse and changing over time, the deep ocean is also a tremendous reservoir of resources and inspiration for our species. But in the Anthropocene era, it is above all an ocean to be preserved, a common good of humanity, which this book proposes to explore.
