Summary

This work reviews data available in the literature on both species of red-mullets. Species can be easily recognized by the presence (striped mullet) or the absence (red mullet) of pigmentation on the first dorsal fin. From 1989, fishing of red-mullet decreased and increased for striped-mullet. A few rearing attempts have only been carried out in striped-mullet. Good quality eggs were collected but larval rearing remains difficult. In captivity, the growth is not rapid. The assets of striped-mullet for aquaculture are numerous (a high quality flesh, the availability of juveniles in the wild, reproduction observed in captivity and a high retail price). However, questions remain on hatchery and growing-out phases. Data included in this work may interest researchers, students or industrialists but also all people interested in these species. Keywords : red mullet, Mullus barbatus, Mullus surmuletus, biology, fisheries, market, aquaculture.
