Summary

A modest group in terms of number of species, aphids are some of the most significant plant pests in temperate environments. Arable crops offer them huge spaces in which to feed, reproduce and cause serious damage, damage which Man has up to now attempted to control with mainly polluting control methods. Regular monitoring of aphid pest populations is used to assess the risks run and help prepare efficient, integrated pest control methods.
The authors describe 35 species of the most damaging aphids and provide biological elements to help improve the approach towards and understanding of these insects. The work aims to promote the observation of nature and the introduction of monitoring methods prior to using more environmentally-friendly integrated pest control.
