Summary

Farming systems based on direct seeding with a permanent plant cover were discussed from a research point of view and from that of an analysis of practices and results. Such systems are traditional in Central America, and cover several million hectares of mechanically farmed land in Brazil and other South American countries. They are currently being adapted to animal draught in Brazil, and are also being tested in Africa and the Indian Ocean.
