Summary

The four vipers and ten grass snakes found in mainland France and Corsica exhibit biological characteristics and morphological diversity that are the focus of this book, illustrated with exceptional photographs: molting processes, predation sequences, birth and hatching, scenes of courtship battles, and even… feigning death as a defense mechanism against predators!

As symbols of wildlife, these animals—whose habits are little known—pay a heavy price due to popular beliefs. Scientific studies, combined with the efforts of organizations, help raise awareness of these species and organize conservation efforts, as 5 species are endangered and 12 are experiencing declining populations. The approximately 250 pictures in this book, taken in the wild while respecting the snakes’ natural habitat, serve as a testament to these magnificent creatures, which are part of our biodiversity. These images reflect the author’s passion, to which she devotes regular observations as well as numerous public lectures.

This book has become a “classic” among Françoise Serre Collet's beautiful nature books, and this updated 3rd edition includes 8 new fact sheets to help distinguish between similar species that are often confused.
