Summary

The successes and excesses of molecular biology have, to a certain extent, been based on the computer metaphor of genetic "programming". Henri Atlan raises questions as to the implications of this metaphor for the orientation of research and scientific interpretation, and also concerning information intended for non-specialists, citizens and decision-makers. Recent discoveries concerning prions, cloning and developmental biology have called this model into question, reopening the debate as to its epigenetic effects and emphasising the limits to this new reductionism. Theories concerning the complexity and self-organisation of living beings, in which subject Henri Atlan was a pioneer, throw light on these questions and situate them in the more global context of the evolution of modern biology.
