Summary

The "transferability" of scientific knowledge becomes a social issue as soon as science is expected to participate in strategic decisions. This is the case for environmental questions, and more broadly any situation in which a decision depends, at least in part, on the interpretation of scientific knowledge. Through contributions from anthropologists, ergonomists, agronomists, ecologists, geographers, archaeologists, mathematicians and epistemologists, the book pinpoints the difficulties inherent in “transferring” knowledge between scientific disciplines and between scientists and other social players. It is intended for researchers, teachers and students interested in the close relations between science and action, and also for decision-makers working with scientists.
