Summary

Animal experimentation is generally seen as essential to the progress of science and, consequently, to the happiness of humanity. Until 1968, therefore, it had been given the most absolute freedom. The law, however, forced on by changes in customs and ideas, is infiltrating everywhere and animal experimentation can no longer escape its influence. Many points in the new European Union directive of 22 September 2010 on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes, whose main effects will make themselves felt from 2013 onwards, have sickened the animal protection associations. And yet it marks a new victory for law by creating the conditions for it to replace ethics which, until now, have basically governed the protection of animals intended for experimentation.
