This book, which brings together researchers from very diverse disciplines and concerns, has three goals: take stock of the question of pain and related states in animals, examine in turn animal pain and human pain and clarify the ethical bases for the debate. Animals do not have a language comparable to our own and cannot therefore state their pain, yet their behaviour is far from silent. This question can thus be raised again under a wider horizon than a strictly human one, resulting in renewed understanding. In return, the recognition of animal pain raises ethical problems for man which he cannot put off indefinitely.
