What is variety in plant breeding? How and why has a variety been created? The book aims to answer these questions through a fairly simple presentation of all major breeding methods for the creation of varieties and incorporating the tools used more and more: doubled haploidy and molecular markers. The development of "scientific" breeding at the end of the 19th century very quickly led to populations with varying degrees of uniformity. These were called varieties. Based on the biological characteristics of the species and social and economic considerations, the breeder creates population varieties, pure lines, hybrids, synthetic varieties or clones. The aim of improving plants is to unite the greatest number of favourable genes in a same variety. The book shows how this can be achieved for the various types of variety by combining breeding and reproduction systems. Conventional methods are in no way outdated; they are still needed, as the management and use principles of the genetic variability remain the same and the new tools from molecular biology, genomics and biotechnologies should be incorporated into conventional methods to make them more effective.
