Summary

Living beings interact with one another and with their environment through their senses. However, human infrastructure and activities emit artificial light at night, as well as noise and volatile compounds that can degrade and fragment sensory landscapes, making ecosystems less functional. While the artificialization of natural habitats is identified as one of the major driver of biodiversity loss, sensory pollutants remain a minor concern in public policy. 

This book first re-centers sensory perception as a key factor of how ecosystems and landscapes function. It then examines the impact of light, noise, and odor pollution on wildlife and ecosystems, before proposing solutions to mitigate them. Finally, it calls for greater consideration of these issues in land-use planning through ecological network policies.
