Summary

How can we flush out the ideologies at the heart of new scientific disciplines? The scientific ideologies are interwoven at the very start of new scientific disciplines - biotechnologies, ecology, nanotechnologies - and develop a recurring theme: the alterations made by the human being to himself and to the environment through technology. Fears or hopes are generated by these ideologies of Western modernity. When they move sideways then distance themselves from the discipline with which they were interwoven, they appear in the public sphere as ideologies adorned with the prestige of science and its pretentions to scientific truth. Marie-Hélène Parizeau illustrates this process in genetics and biotechnologies, then conservation biology. Finally, she sets out to put her theses to the test of science currently being created about nanotechnologies.
Starting with cybernetics, linked to artificial intelligence and robotics, the nanotechnologies have fed on the scientific ideology of the hybridity between man and machine - the cyborg - as a product of co-evolution of the human species and technology, altering the process of natural evolution. The example of nanotechnologies conveys a scientific ideology interlaced with the beginnings of a new scientific discipline.
