Summary

Philippe Descola is moving away here from the dualism which has been opposing physical anthropology (which establishes the unit beyond the variations) and cultural or social anthropology (which states variations based on unity) since the late 19th century. He is suggesting an ecology of relationships between humans and non-humans. By agreeing to give up its anthropocentrism, anthropology will be able to resolve the debates which keep springing up between natural and cultural determinisms.
