Summary

Many of the world’s great lakes are not, in fact, large enough to keep up with human use, given its evolution for over a century. The limits of these macro-ecosystems on a continental scale are revealed by a whole series of pathologies, accompanied in turn by a degradation of ecosystem services such as fishing, water supply, self-purification, pollution dilution, cultural and recreational services etc. In addition, all these tensions are now being exerted in a multi-stress context due to climate change. The size “great lake”, the inertia and complexity it confers on said systems, leads to unprecedented exposure conditions and responses quite difficult to take into account in terms of management.

The book offers a multidisciplinary analysis of various restoration experiments carried out on the great lakes of the planet (showing successes as well as failures). Full of various insights about the safeguarding and preservation of the world’s lake heritage, this study opens up avenues for reflection on the upcoming ecological challenges that need to be met in order to prepare the “lake-watershed-society” systems for the future in terms of climate and pollution.

This book is intended for students, teachers and researchers, lake managers, as well as the general public interested in the preservation and restoration of the great lakes.
