Summary

This work presents two studies of small-scale coffee growing in Madagascar, viewed against a regional backdrop, that of the East coast, the island's main production area. The term "coffee transition" highlights producers' remarkable ability to adjust the role of coffee in their farming systems so as to satisfy their basic requirements and ensure their survival.
