Using examples, this book looks at the various techniques used for genetic improvement of livestock, such as selection, crossing and consanguinity. It describes the advantages and drawbacks of each method for use in the tropics and subtropics, and how they can be used to improve the key characters in livestock. The importance of maintaining genetic diversity among local animal races in warm regions is also stressed. Lastly, the book looks at the application to genetic improvement of the recent progress made in genomics, notably including the development of molecular genetic markers at DNA level. It is a valuable tool for farmers, livestock farmers, technicians and agricultural advisors in tropical regions, and a reference book for higher education and rural development programmes.
